  4.                                           THE NEED FOR RECREATION

  7. When our country was in its infancy, juvenile problems were
  8. virtually non-existent. If this was indeed true, it must have been
  9. because of the survival training young people had to go through -
  10. hunting, fishing, farming and apprenticeship at least, in part,
  11. provided a form of recreation. The insatiable desire of the young
  12. to spend their boundless energy was more than satisfied. Today the
  13. 18 to 26 year old has the same amount of energy and not many
  14. healthy places to spend it. The current rate of juvenile vandalism,
  15. crime, alcoholism, drugs, etc. would seem to indicate a need for a
  16. kind of recreation young people can relate to.

  18. Disc golf is uniquely successful in providing this type of
  19. recreation for young people. It gives them a method of expression
  20. that is not intimidating to them, ie. Frisbee disc is not an
  21. establishment sport. Frisbee disc is, however, the 8th most popular
  22. activity among Americans. It is currently outdistancing softball,
  23. tennis, racquetball, baseball, football and club golf to mention a
  24. few. A recent survey conducted at the La Mirada Regional Park in
  25. California compared the free use of a Disc Golf Course with the
  26. free use of 12 lighted tennis courts. The results were pretty
  27. remarkable. Usage on the Disc Golf Course was 246% greater than
  28. that on the 12 lighted tennis courts combined, while the cost of
  29. the Championship 18 Hole Disc Golf Course was only 4% of the
  30. investment that the park had in the tennis courts.

  32. People from all walks of life enjoy the fresh air, exercise and
  33. challenge of the game. Elementary school children may be seen on
  34. one hole, while the next hole has a foursome of scientists from the
  35. Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Many families with young children play
  36. together during early evening hours. La Canada High School's
  37. Physical Education Disc Class (40 boys and girls) uses the course
  38. once a week as part of their class activity. Disc golf seems to
  39. have an appeal to all ages, however, the specific participation of
  40. the hard-to-please young adult is particularly gratifying.

  42. USE SURVEY AND OBSERVATION A recent survey conducted by the County
  43. of Los Angeles at the Oak Grove Disc Golf Course, indicates the
  44. following traffic patterns

  46.       7-12 year olds     16%
  47.      13-17 year olds     10%
  48.      18-26 year olds     60%
  49.      27-35 year olds     10%
  50.      36-44 year olds      3%
  51.      45 and up            1%

  54. MAINTENANCE AND VANDALISM
  55. Vandalism to hardware, and the potential increase in maintenance
  56. cost, were the biggest concerns of Park departments in their
  57. decision to install a Disc Golf Course. Subsequent to the
  58. installation of the over 300 Disc Golf Courses in existence today,
  59. concerns turned to astonishment. There has been little or no
  60. vandalism to course hardware, (vandalism in the Parks is now
  61. virtually nonexistent), and maintenance cost have gone down, not
  62. up. This is quite remarkable since many of the Parks were
  63. experiencing high instances of vandalism prior to the installation
  64. of their Disc Golf Course.

  68. To determine the level of participation in leisure sports and
  69. outdoor activities, Americans were asked to indicate which
  70. activities they had participated in one or more times within the
  71. last 12 months. The sports with the greatest appeal are swimming
  72. 37%, bicycling 27%, bowling 24%, fishing 24%, hiking 21%, camping
  73. 19%, basketball 18%, frisbee disc 17%, softball 16%, tennis 14%,
  74. hunting 13%, golf 8%.
